If this is your first holiday in Croatia, you should know it is best to fly to Split, as this is the closest airport to Hvar. From the airport, you will take the bus to the port of Split, where you will embark on a ferryboat that will take you on an approx. 105 minutes trip on the sea, to reach Stari Grad. The ferry takes cars as well, so you can drive around Hvar if you prefer. You can see details about the ferry on the Jadrolinija website.
